Education at a Glance 2016, an annual report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), was launched in September, based on an analysis of the education systems of the 35 OECD member countries and other partner countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Lithuania, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia and South Africa).
The main focuses of this publication were the impact of learning between countries; the financial and human resources invested in education; access, participation and progression in education; the learning environment and the organization of schools, and, in this edition, two new indicators were introduced: one on the completion rate of higher education students and another one in the performance of school leaders. This publication is also intended to address, among other factors, the gender imbalance in education and the profile of students who attend and finish vocational education.
As a curiosity, Portugal is one of the two countries where the graduation rate in vocational programs increased by more than 40 percentage points. It is also the country with the highest number of young people graduated from the a 1st cycle degree or equivalent, between 2005 and 2014, and the country where employers are primarily responsible for non-formal education, with more than 40% of activity in the area.
