In 2017 we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus Programme (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students), which is considered one of the most popular initiatives in the European construction which has allowed higher education students from all Europe to study for a period in another European country. The Programme started in 1987 with, in the first year, 3.244 motilities of students from 11 countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom). Between 1987 and 2017, 9 million participants benefited of an international experience to study, travel, do an internship, gain professional experience or volunteer in another country.
Through 2017, in all Europe, there have been various celebrations and initiatives to mark this important milestone which may be consulted in the 30th anniversary website or Newsletter that the European Commission prepares.
This year we also celebrate the 60th anniversary of another European milestone, the Treaty of Rome, which established the beginning of the European cooperation with the creation of the European Economic Community (EEC).
In Portugal, Agência Nacional Erasmus+ educação e formação and Agência Nacional Erasmus+ Juventude em Ação, are organizing various initiatives to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Erasmus.
